Post TI-qualifiers

I would like to start with thanking you all who have been cheering for us in the qualifier. It means a lot to us to see that we have such nice and dedicated fans and we always do our best to perform as good as possible to make you guys proud!

So, back to the qualifier where we started off with a wonderful score of 0-2! 😀 When you are playing this kind of qualifier it’s definitely not a score you want to start out with since it puts pressure on you in multiple ways. It’s never good to have the feeling that you “need” to win the next game because it could result in you trying to do too much in the game to win it or just be scared to make a mistake. I’m very happy we managed to leave those feelings behind and turn it around by winning the next 3 games finishing the day with 3-2. We did lose a couple of games that definitely was winnable for us but we tried to not think too much about it and just focus on the next games and try to not make the same mistakes twice.

The first game in the grand finals vs. Escape gaming was the most crazy one. I made the decision to go for an Aghs on Venge which I’ve actually never done before but it turned out to be a very good choice. Since they had Void together with all their damage from Invoker and Timber I knew that I would have to sacrifice myself every fight to save someone from the Chrono, so by getting the aghs I made sure I could still stay in the fights even after I died. The game looked quite grim for us since they got more and more of our base so when we managed to kill Qojqva without a buyback we saw an opportunity to go for the push and end the game!

After the first game I decided to reboot my computer because my computer froze for a second during one of the team fights. It turned out to be a big mistake though because there was some updates queued so in the end it took like 30 minutes for the computer to fully restart. Since we didn’t know how long it was gonna take, we just waited for it to restart and the admins didn’t say much about it. We constantly gave updates of what happened but then out of the blue the admins wrote “Penalty level 3 given to Alliance”. We were quite surprised because they didn’t give us any heads up at all so when we saw that we got a penalty we instantly switched to an old computer we had at the bootcamp. I understand they can’t wait forever but I think it was very poorly handled by the admins. If they would have written “Alliance you will receive a level 1 penalty in 5 minutes” or something like that we would have switched straight away because you never want to get a draft penalty (a level 3 penalty means that you only have 20 seconds bonus time instead of 130 so it’s quite a big difference) and on top of that we got the level 3 penalty out of the blue after not even receiving a level 1 or 2 penalty. I guess it might be in the rules about how long break you could have but a heads up by the admins would have been nice as well ^^.

In the second game, Escape Gaming went for a crazy push strat that we weren’t able to fend off so they got a rax very early. Khezu went for a shadow blade to be able to pick off s4’s Ember so he couldn’t really split push and delay the game in that way either and fighting them head on with all their heals was impossible so the game was pretty hard. We lost the game quite fast.

Third game was a battle against the clock for us. Compared to the second game where Escape Gaming wanted to push us, it was now the other way around. The problem for us was that they had a Tinker to defend their base with and also a Medusa for the late game. I can really see their lineup work – if they manage to defend the base and get strong enough on the Medusa it would be really hard for us to finish the game but even though we didn’t get any rax until quite late we stayed somewhat equal in farm. EGM even managed to get a aghs + refresher up on Shadow Shaman which made it a bit easier for us to break the base. I think the game was very even though – if they would be able to kill one of us with the Tinker’s aghs (which they almost did a couple of fights) they would probably be able to chase us down with the Night Stalker and take control of the map but we managed to survive their burst and heal up with Jugger’s healing ward and the heals from Dazzle.

Last game was also quite even but for me the one I felt we had the most control over. The one thing I was concerned about was if the game would come to the point where Necrophos would have aghs and be able to kill someone without the ability to buy back. Since they had Lone Druid they could easily go and take our whole base if they would get a pick off like that but luckily for us the game never reached that point! 🙂 We were able to shut down Khezu on Slardar in the early game because of Lich so even though Qojqva farmed a lot on Lone Druid we farmed a lot on all of our 3 cores as well. Loda played somewhat of a play maker this game on Void so Bulldog and S4 both had more farm than him but at the same time he got enough farm to be a threat in the fights.

After we won the series and qualified for TI I was both happy and relieved. It’s so stressful to play these qualifiers so I was happy that it was over and that we can continue and focus on TI instead! We are playing in an online tournament called “Global Grand Master” the upcoming two weeks. It’s a double elimination bracket and I think it’s nice for us to play some officials to stay in shape.

  1. I can still recall the heart attacks I’ve had when someone makes a mistake in every team fight. Im so happy for you guys making it to TI this year. Sincerely, Alliance’s biggest f[A]n!

  2. First game was easily the most exciting game to watch from the entire TI qualifiers. Was funny, because I was so hyped that you guys had won, but then remember it was only the first game.

  3. I am pretty sure game two was on Bulldog. We all know his Timber is a LuL.
Anyway, graz on the qualifiers guys. Even though i wont be able to see you guys at Seattle, i am very hyped to see you guys at Ti. Last year, there was no Alliance, but this year you guys will be there and i wont need to cheer for some other team and betray you guys. :). You worked for this the whole year, and you just almost forcefully took it!
The Valve most be like Oops should have invited Alliance right now. Cuz like you said TI invites were pretty questionable. Like Navi who got black in the last 2 months? and were not black at all the whole year, MVP getting invite over Fnatic, and even Secret got getting one even though they are the Shanghai major champs. Volvo was like ohhh too many teams who need to get invs, nah im gonna put all of them in qualifiers and see them tear each other down. and they did. Man oh, man. The qualifiers were nightmarish. I thought maybe you gotta go through wildcards to secure your spot at some point. But you proved me wrong. You survived the deadpool!!!!!! That quals final though. Such a crazy game. Especially the first one. However when you guys won the first game, i knew you got it.
Anyway, graz again on securing the spot and good luck on that offline tournament. Cant wait to see you guys on the TI stage and reck some NA teams kappa.

    1. Hey! Thanks for cheering for us! The first game was crazy indeed :D. The fights were so long and insane and we could probably have lost in many points of the game but we managed to stay alive somehow ^^. Just gonna have to go and show them that a qualifier team can win TI now as well! 😉

    2. What are you on about? Secret couldn’t get an invite because they changed roster. MVP certainly deserved an invite more than Fnatic, they have had much better results.

  4. Hey Akke, I’m a big fan and loved your blog. Keep up the good work and congratulations on qualifications. I just point out a minor thing, I think it is unjustified on your part to call admins role in penalty situation as “very poorly handled”. First, I’m assuming the rules are clearly laid out for delays and it is participants responsibility to be thorough about them. Second, admins are under no obligation to send out reminders about what level of penalty is being applied at every 5 min interval. You probably agree to this point but you also point out that it would be nice if they just said it anyways in case participants are unaware, but admins might have been assuming that you already know about this rule and hence might have felt the need to remind every once in a while. Third, the existence of spare computer is something admins probably did not know about and hence might have assumed that waiting is the only way.

Although it is a small incident, it is very harsh to call them incompetent. Mistakes were made from both sides, more so on your part than from their end to be honest. And this is coming from someone who is a hardcore alliance fan. That’s my two cents on the episode, I hope you guys do well on all upcoming tourneys! Good Luck! 🙂

    1. Hey! Thank you!

Regarding the “very poorly handled”, I agree with you that it was a bit harsh. But at the same time I think it is the admins job to inform the players of what’s going on, just as we informed them what was going on with the issue we had. The rules state that after 5 minutes you receive a warning and level 1 penalty, after 10 minutes a warning and level 2 penalty and at 15 min a warning and level 3 penalty. We never received a warning for the first 2 before we got the level 3 and when the games are as serious as this I think you need to be very clear what is happening!

Thank you for your feedback, I should probably have explained myself a bit better 🙂

      1. Det är bra Akke, ta plats. Visa att man inte kan hålla på hur som helst i viktiga turneringar. Ni h[A]r koll!

  5. Nice work Akke & nice update. Keep playing events as much as you can until TI, I think you guys play better the more games you play, the breaks between events can sometimes work opposite to having rest, you loose the pace of the game. best of luck for the future.

  6. Great article Akke, I’m amazed for the sacrifice you guys’ve been giving to your fans and to the gameplay that makes you great as a team. GL in TI, it’s true that the admin must had told you about the penalty before but that’s been something that you know would happen since they’ve been doing this for quite a while, forget about that, focus on what is coming and play an awesome TI ^^.

  7. Yo Akke, on Windows 10 in Settings > Updates there is a blue link “Advanced”. It brings up the option to decide how and when you want to update ;P

  8. Thanks for writing these posts and congrats Akke, you guys really deserve it!

I had to stop myself from yelling on the train to work when you guys won game 4.

    Good luck at TI6!

P.S. If you could, could you please let EGM know that my friend Alfie is his biggest fan, he yells EGM for MVP every game haha!

  9. It makes me really happy to see DoTA players who are very articulate because it breaks the societal stereotype that gamers are (pardon the word) dumb. My husband actually pointed out that gamers are really geniuses because they have to think while in-game and make reactive strategies out of present situation. Well, no argument from me there. I do think that gamers are indeed intelligent people. It’s nice reading your blog, Akke. Keep doing you!

I am a Na’Vi fan but you certainly have my respect. I enjoyed following your games in the TI qualifiers. Good luck on your next games – LANs, TI, etc. 🙂

  10. Congrats to Alliance for making it to TI6, super hyped to watch you guys play.

I really liked those lineups where Bulldog gets Beastmaster, so that S4 can play a more farming oriented hero like Ember. But Beast gets banned often, so maybe a slardar/void/tide that other offlaners have so much success with. So I hope you guys can try out more heroes, such as having Bulldog practice with a playmaking hero so that Loda and S4 can get heroes that scale better.

  11. Im crying when u guys won qualified against Escape T.T im watching the game 1 till 4 and i cant stop to shout “GO ALLIANCE !”
    proud of u guys !
Big fans of Alliance ! Go [A] Go !
Good Luck for TI 6 Akke and Alliance !
